Glamping (for “glamorous camping”) is not yet mainstream, but it has been one of the strongest trends in tourism for a few years. According to “Google Website Trends”, the search frequency for the term “glamping” showed an average annual increase of 80% between 2009 and 2014. Not only the term and the search, but also the bookings confirm the boom: Klaus Schneider, Germany manager of Vacanceselect, a company that is considered the market leader with 1,100 glamping accommodations at 90 locations, reports an increase in the number of overnight stays in the glamping segment a total of 486% in the last 3 years.
Glamping is a holiday in luxurious, creative, unusual or visually appealing rental accommodation - partly on campsites, partly in the great outdoors. This ranges from tree houses , pods, teepees, yurts , lodges and safari tents to comfortable mobile homes or rustic chalets.
Tourism experts are celebrating this development, which is currently inspiring or giving rise to an entire industry in Europe. Above all, German and Dutch tour operators, who have secured space on Europe's most popular campsites in order to market their rental accommodation there with increasing success. But the campsite operators themselves, as well as farmers and other property owners, are also taking advantage of the boom and preferring to offer safari tents, huts and sleeping barrels in their parks, gardens and fields instead of guest rooms.
